As President, Polk gained the land for New Mexico and California from Mexico, and Oregon from Britain.
Birthplace: Pineville, NC
James Knox Polk was born here on November 2nd, 1795. On the grounds of the home is a monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It was removed from it's original location in 1964 so that the replica birthplace could be built. In 1968, it was placed and re-dedicated in it's present location.
Ancestral Home: Columbia, TN
The only surviving residence of James Polk, it is located adjacent home of his 2 sisters. In the courtyard is a fountain preserved from his home at "Polk Place", in downtown Nashville, this was also his original burial site, but it has since been demolished. The grounds feature 3 gardens.
Gravesite: Nashville, TN
When his home was demolished in 1900, James K. Polk's body was moved from the Polk Family Cemetery to the state capitol.
Memorial Gardens: Columbia, TN
In the Polk Memorial Gardens, amongst the many graves, is a cenotaph to the President.
