Always explore around the grave
As you may learn at some gravesites (Van Buren; Taft), what you think is the grave, is not always the grave.
Always check if there are multiple Presidents buried in the same cemetery
Some places have more than 1 President buried there, like Arlington, First Unitarian Church; Hollywood Cemetery, ect.
Always plan trips to an area, not a gravesite
The Washington, D.C. area includes Mount Vernon Estate, and Arlington. Central Virginia has Richmond, and Charlottesville, and so on.
Plan to go tour the estates, homes, museums, and libraries of the Presidents
Don't just go to visit the graves, visit the homes! Mount Vernon; Monticello, Montpelier; Ash Lawn-Highland; Sherwood Forest... These homes are historic and are a great experience!
Pack for any weather, and pack a journal
As you may have read, during my visit to Arlington it was wet and rainy, it was so wet, in fact, that rain soaked through our coats, so pack umbrellas, hats, cameras, video cameras. And pack a journal to record your findings. If you discover you are out near there again, maybe take a second trip there.
Keep a photo album and folder
A photo album is a great way to collect the pictures you take at the homes and gravesites, and a folder is good for keeping papers in, such as pamphlets, directions, postcards, and other papers.
Always Plan Ahead
Although it may not be fun, planning ahead is a great way to make sure you don't miss anything during your trips. While planning, make sure you look up all of the places you're going, and write down important information, (hours, fees, things to do, ect.).
A warning to those who plan to go to visit James Monroe's Former Burial Site!
In 1831, James Monroe was interred in New York City Marble Cemetery, however, this cemetery today is almost never open to the public, so you must either plan the trip around an open day at the cemetery, or contact the office WAY ahead of time, which costs money.
