James A. Garfield

Believed that people who wanted certain jobs in the government had to take a test to show they were qualified.

Birthplace: Moreland Hills, OH

James Abram Garfield, the last of the "log cabin" Presidents, was born in a log cabin on this site on November 19th, 1831.  The original cabin no longer exists, but a replica is located on the site.

Home: Mentor, OH

This home was purchased by Garfield in 1876.  After his assassination in 1881, Lucretia added a Library and a Vault.  This set the precedent for modern-day Presidential Libraries.  The home is named "Lawnfield."

Grave: Cleveland, OH

James A. Garfield was first placed in a temporary vault, than in a brick tomb, and finally, the mausoleum.  The casket is above ground, suggesting a permanent lying in state.

Death Site: Long Branch, NJ

James Garfield died here on September 19, 1881.  The home no longer exists, but a marker is located there.

Memorial: Washington, D.C.

The James Abram Garfield Memorial is situated near the U.S. Capitol.

Memorial: Hiram, OH

This statue is located on the campus of Hiram College.  The statue was decapitated one week after it's dedication, but the head was discovered in July of 2009.
